「何もない、何も見えない」
光も物体も存在が希薄な風景を「絵にする」
目に映るものをどう絵にするかにこだわってきました。
世の中には絵になるもの/ならないもの、絵にしやすいもの/しにくいものがあります。
そして「絵にする」という言い回しもあります。私はこの「絵にする」ことをやりたくて絵を描いています。
近年の主たる題材は、夜の空き地です。
夜の空き地は日常的な風景ですが、建物のない平地に暗い闇が広がるその場所は、光も物体も存在が希薄です。これを「絵にする」ことができるか、そしてそれはどんな絵になるのかを知りたくて描いています。
「何も見えない」暗闇、「何もない」空き地。その時、私たちは何を見ているのか、「見える」や「在る」は何に根ざしているのか。私たちは見えないことが見えていて、ないことが在るから、暗闇や空き地を認識しています。その見えない(とされる)もの、ない(とされる)ものをよく見て描くことをしています。
日本画顔料は粒状で、光あるいは闇を構造的に捉え解釈することに向く素材です。
何もないとされるものを物質的な顔料を重ねて形作っていくことも楽しみの一つです。
坂本繁二郎に私淑し、その道を志しています。
坂本繁二郎の言葉に「今ならなんでも絵にできる」というものがあり、それに触発されたことも今私が空き地や暗闇を描くようになった理由の一つです。

I have been focusing on how to make what I see into a picture.
There are things in the world that can be pictured and things that cannot be pictured, things that are easy to picture and things that are difficult to picture.
There is also the phrase "to make it into a picture.
I paint because I want to "make it into a picture.
In recent years, my main subject matter has been vacant lots at night.
A vacant lot at night is an everyday scene, but in this place where darkness spreads across the flat land with no buildings, light and objects are scarce.
I want to see if I can "make a picture" of it, and what kind of picture it will be.
The darkness where "nothing can be seen" and the empty space where "nothing exists. What are we seeing at that time, and what are the roots of "seeing" and "being"? We perceive darkness and open space because we see what we cannot see, and because what is not there is there.
We paint by looking closely at that which is (supposedly) invisible and that which is (supposedly) not there.
Japanese painting pigments are granular and are materials that lend themselves to the structural capture and interpretation of light or darkness. I also enjoy layering material pigments on top of what is considered to be nothingness to give it shape.
I admire Hanjiro Sakamoto and aspire to follow his path.
He once said, "Anything can be made into a picture now," which inspired me to paint vacant lots and darkness.
